UK Family: holiday in Bulgaria or Holiday from hell

Date: 26.11.2005

A GBP 1,700 holiday to Bulgaria turned into a nightmare for a family from Bridlington, Great Britain, who told their story to "Bridlington Today" newspaper.

The family thought they had found the ideal holiday in "the lovely Bulgarian village of Elenite, close to the beach with lots of facilities". The destination was picked after checking the brochure of tourism company "Direct Holidays".

"The location was lovely but the hotel had a compliment of cats, rats, cockroaches, sewage traps, walls soaked in urine and there was sewage on the beach," says Cheryl Dockray, 35.

In a long list of complaints, the disgruntled British tourists say the food at the all-inclusive hotel was uncooked, there were flies everywhere, electric sockets had bare live wires hanging down, patio furniture was broken, rats were spotted near the swimming pool.

Suzanne Rough, a spokeswoman for Direct Holidays, said: "We do take all complaints extremely seriously and recognise some improvements are required to ensure a higher level of customer satisfaction at this property."

"This holiday from Direct Holidays was a complete nightmare from start to finish," says Dockray and vows never to return to Bulgaria.
