Two Get Injured on Bulgaria Air Flight

Date: 30.12.2005

Boeing hits a zone of high turbulence flying back from Madrid

A passenger and a flight attendant were injured when a Boeing 737-500 of Bulgaria Air, flying back from Madrid, hit a zone of high turbulence twice.

"At about 8:25 p.m. we were flying over Brindisi, Italy, at 10,670 m when, all of a sudden, the plane plummeted violently," said flight commander Ventsislav Neychev.

"Nobody had warned us about the high turbulence zone. We immediately switched on the alarm signal and ordered the passengers to fasten their seatbelts. Then, I told the flight control tower about the dangerous situation we were in and requested permission for descent. Later, I understood that a woman onboard broke her arm in the accident. Finally, we received permission for descent and went down to 8840. But just then we were hit by another violent turbulence," said Captain Neychev.

Just at that time, young flight attendant Andrey Atanassov was on a routine checkup to see whether all passengers had fastened their safety belts. When the plane suddenly dropped seventy meters down, he lost balance and got three fractures on one of his legs.

When the plane finally landed at the Sofia airport, the paramedics gave first aid to the injured flight attendant and passenger.

This has been the first accident with a plane of Bulgaria Air since the air carrier was founded three years ago. Aviation experts say that the zones of high turbulence could hardly be avoided.
