Sofia threatened by shocking transport hike

Date: 25.09.2005

The cost of public transportation in Sofia could increase by as much as 50%.

A city official said that on Wednesday they would discuss the possible rise.

Private companies operating the fixed-fee minibus taxis in the city have also proposed a price increase, Sofia's transport committee head Stanimir Zashev has said.

A ticket that now costs one lev (approximately 0.5 euro) could jump up to 1.5 leva.

Taxis have also boosted their fees recently, after several leaps in petrol prices.

With an average wage of about 150 euros, many Bulgarians will have a hard time covering their everyday transportation expenses.
