Bulgaria opens ancient military fortress for visits

Date: 19.10.2005

Part of the restored ancient Roman military fortress "Sostra" has been opened for visitors in the picturesque old mountain town of Troyan in Central Bulgaria.

Sostra is the most preserved Roman military fortress in Bulgaria, Bozhidar Dimitrov of the National Historical Museum said, and from an architectural point of view it is unique for the whole Roman Empire.

Part of the fortress has been restored and is open to visitors with plans aiming atthe whole building completely restored by the following summer. If this happens, the fortress will enter the tourist routes for the so-called cultural tourism, Dimitrov forecasts.

The fortress, which is the only military stronghold outside of a modern town, could become the second most visited landmark in the region after the Troyan Monastery, Dimitrov adds.

Sostra used to be the fortress of a military cohort of a thousand people, and an important milestone on the ancient road between Escos and Filipopolis.
