About 600,000 a year visit the Sofia zoo

Date: 23.11.2005

Sofia is the first Balkan capital where a zoo was founded. In 1887 King Ferdinand ordered that cages be built in the park around his palace. The first inhabitant was a beautiful vulture - a representative of the Bulgarian wild fauna. Thus, in 1888 the beginning of the future collection of the Sofia zoo is set. When the animals increased in number, the zoo was moved to the end of the city near the King's garden. In 1893 the park opens its doors to visitors.

Today the national zoo spreads over a territory of 3000 sq.m. in the Hunting Park situated between the Hladilnika and Darvenitsa residential districts. Some 1340 animals live in it. The birds' diversity is the greatest - 320 species. Dr. Ivan Ivanbov, the zoo's director, has found "adopters" who help in raising 110 of the animals. The last babies born in the zoo are a kangaroo and a macaque.

The visitors' number varies from 400,000 to 600,000 a year.
