New low-cost Airlines take off to Sofia

Date: 22.09.2005

No-frills airlines SkyEurope and May Air have firmly declared their intention to start operations in Bulgaria, it emerged at the international ROUTES aviation forum.

Slovakia's SkyEurope is expected to be the first to launch flights Sofia-Bratislava in December.

Italy's May Air have declared willingness to start flights to Bologna or Venice, but no specific date has been set for the launch.

The Bulgarian side has proposed the launch of new flights to Qatar Airways, Air China, Dutch airline KLM, Danish Cimber Air and UK easyJET.

Bulgaria has also established contacts with China's first private air carrier Hainan Airlines, as well as Canada's charter company Skyservice, which is considering the launch of Sofia-Toronto flights.

UK First Choice Airways has expressed interest in servicing the Bristol-Sofia and Glasgow-Sofia destinations.

The new destinations could be launched in two years at the earliest, Sofia Airport's head of marketing department Mariana Kirilova specified.

Sofia airport officials fear that the limited capacity of the hub will make it impossible to welcome all airlines in 2006.

Low-cost airlines are likely to go for touchdown on the old terminal, where the fees will be lower.

Hungary's Wizz Air was the first low-cost airline to touch down in Sofia in September.
