More Tourists, Less Money

Date: 09.09.2006

Foreigners have spent around 450 million euro in Bulgaria, about as much as Bulgarians have spent abroad

The number of foreign tourists that visit Bulgaria has grown, but the revenues from tourism have fallen, shows the report of the Bulgarian Tourism Agency for the first six months of 2006.

Some 2 845 075 foreigners have chosen to spend their vacation in Bulgaria, up 4.82 % over the same period last year. However, revenues stood at 450,1 million euro, a decrease by 0.2 %. On the other hand, Bulgarians have spent an estimated 428.7 million euro on vacations abroad, up 12.05 % compared with the same period last year.

However, tour operators think that the information cannot be fully trusted as the statistics only gives information about the money spent on accommodation while tourists spend at least twice as much during their stay.
