Tourism aces urge Bulgarian MPs to invest in infrastructure

Date: 08.01.2006

Bulgaria's Government should invest more in the infrastructure as it is one of the key aspects for Conventional Tourism, and for any tourism for that matter, aces from the business stressed at the country's key annual tourism event, Bulgaria Dream Area ( ).

The spokespeople varied in backgrounds, nationalities and professions but they all agreed on one point - that Bulgaria had all the preconditions for a successful tourism but lacked one of the main factors - good infrastructure.

We have all invested immensely in establishing Bulgaria's good image in the world, Martin Kolb, Chairman of the Bulgarian Convention and Visitors Bureau (BCVB) said. Now it is time for the government to pay up and take care of its responsibilities, he added.

There are huge potholes in the streets, big enough for a car to disappear into, Kolb, who is also General Manager of Radisson SAS hotel and one of the co-organizers of the forum said. The area around the airport would make any foreigner want to turn the cab and leave, he added, explaining that it was absurd to have a tourism authority with no head assigned.

Turning to the politicians Kolb and the rest of the speakers stressed over and over again the importance of the government's involvement in the matters of tourism. It was up to the government to work towards popularizing the country's image, instead all the venues had to strive to do it themselves, Hristo Drumev, Director of the National Palace of Culture explained.

As for the more radical steps, Blagoi Ragin, Chairman of the Board of Bulgarian Hotel & Restaurant Association suggested that all companies in the tourism sphere sign a declaration, urging the parliament to turn the infrastructure their main priority, ahead of the economy and tourism. The good infrastructure would naturally boost the other two sectors, he claimed.
