Constructions threaten Sofia parkland

Date: 14.01.2006

About 55 decares of land in Sofia's Southern Park are threatened by upcoming constructions, the Architects' Union in Bulgaria and the "Triaditsa" district mayor Emil Milev announced.

The land is divided into 12 parcels that have been sold to companies planning to build different venues in over the vegetation. Cafes, restaurants and sports sites are to take precedence over the grass, trees and alleys.

The land belongs to the "Sofia City Company", whose main shareholder is the public company "Sofiiski Imoti."

The trees and vegetation on the brink of the river flowing through the park are also in danger because of pending apartment blocks constructions, the Union warned.

Sofia's Southern Park is one of the few green areas in the capital that still gather thousands of people every day.
