Seaside resorts in Bulgaria desperate for qualified staff

Date: 06.03.2006

The vacation season at the Bulgarian seaside is threatened by the lack of qualified employees, media say.

The season is about to start and there is a big demand for waiters, bartenders, and hotel personnel, but despite lucrative offers, there just aren't enough people willing to take the jobs, private bTV channel reports.

A huge growth in businesses along Bulgaria's coastline is harder and harder to satisfy with the tourism and hospitality schools and universities that currently teach Bulgarian students the secrets of the trade. The fact that most of these schools only offer theoretical classes doesn't help either, the report states, for employers are rarely willing to risk their customers' satisfaction by hiring inexperienced workers.

This problem is often worsened by the fact that many young Bulgarians prefer to spend their summers working abroad, where they could combine a higher salary with a new cultural experience.
