Date: 13.04.2007

Strandja mountain one of the most miraculous and untouched places in the Old Continent. Black sea and virgin nature combined in one.

If you head to the most Southern-Eastern part of Bulgaria to the town of Malko Tarnovo, or along the seaside to summer-resorts Ahtopol and Sinemoretz, you soon get into the magnificent mountain chain of Strandja mountain.

Strandja mountain was declared as National Park in 1995. With its territory of 1161 sq. km. it is the largest protected area in the country.

The park occupies the Bulgarian part of Strandja mountain with an outlet on the sea.

The municipality of the town of Malko Tarnovo and parts of the municipalities of Tsarevo and Primorsko are located within its territory.

There are 21 towns and villages with a population of about 8000.

Strandja National Park consists of 5 reserves: Silkosia (the first reserve in Bulgaria), Tisovitsa, Sredoka, Vitanovo and the Uzunbuzhak biosphere reserve.

The Karst region comprises also 12 protected areas. The highest peak (in the Bulgarian part) of the mountain is Goliamo Gradishte (710 m).

The village of Brashlian is an architectural and historical reserve. Here is the St. Demetrius church from the end of 17th century, a monastery school, an ethnographic collection and the visitor's centre of Natural Park Strandja.
