Bulgaria wants decade of baby boom

Date: 07.03.2006

Bulgaria has drawn up a strategy for boosting its slumping birth rate.

In the next ten years, most families should be choosing to have two children, the Social Ministry says in its plan, which was presented to the public on Monday.

Now couples have an average of 1.2 kids, and the mortality rate is disturbingly high.

All future moms should receive medical attention since the first months of pregnancy, in that way decreasing the risk of offspring deaths, the Social Ministry has decided.

The monthly cash paid to mothers should be increased every year.

With a population that is expected to shrink by another million until 2020, Bulgaria has every reason to worry for its birth rate.

The country has been trying to fight the problem for more than a decade. But low living standards and the continuing emigration of young people have caused the problem to aggravate.
