Coastal Construction Threatens Bulgaria's Tourism

Date: 02.06.2006

A victim of its own success in the tourism sector, Bulgaria tries to calm down coastal construction, which destroys the seaside and pushes away tourists.

Hotels are constructed on the beach itself north of Varna. The lack of control over the architectural style led to inconsistencies and outrageous developments, according to the article.

The agency quotes a hotel owner from Golden Sands resort as saying a number of hotels were constructed without profit intentions but for the sole purpose of money laundering.

Despite the worrying developments Bulgaria maintains its competitiveness as an attractive tourism destination. The main reason is the quality to price ratio in the country, as compared to the one in Spain, Greece and Turkey.

German, British and Scandinavian tourists already arrived in Golden Sands. Some of them have been visiting Bulgaria every summer season and noted the changes and destruction of nature that over-construction led to.
