Bulgaria "Needs more info on EU requirements"

Date: 23.01.2007

People in Bulgaria need more information on the EU requirements that the country has to adhere to, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev has announced.

Stanishev presided over this year's first meeting of the council for coordination and monitoring of Bulgaria's representation agency in the EU.

All ministries and departments have to launch a campaign for clarifying certain EU requirements to the people, Stanishev said, adding that 2007 would be a crucial year for the acquiring of EU funds.

Bulgaria's state administration should try to make as few mistakes as possible, especially if they could lead to the country being condemned by international courts. Just a day before he spoke Bulgaria was sentenced by the European Court of Human Rights to pay EUR 6,000 to a criminal that had been mistreated during arrest.
