Bulgaria ranks 53rd in human development

Date: 29.11.2007

Bulgaria ranks 53rd in a United Nations' chart of the world's human development for 2007, up one spot over last year.

According to the annual Human Development Report (HDR) of the UN the living conditions in Bulgaria improved and that is why the country climbed up one position.

According to the chart, Iceland is the best country in the world to live in, followed by Norway, which had held the top place for six consecutive years.

In comparison to Bulgaria the other newly accepted EU member Romania is below in the chart and occupies spot 60.

Niger, Guinea-Bisau, Burkina Faso, and Sierra Leone take the last places in the chart between 174 and 177.

The index of human development is calculated after observing three important factors - health and longevity, level of education, and actual income per capita.

The index describes the development of environments in which people can develop their full potential and lead productive, creative lives in accord with their needs and interests, according to the site of United Nations Development Program.

The HDR chart does not presume a close link between national economic growth and the expansion of individual human choices.
