Bulgaria’s bread market shrinks by 3% annually

Bulgaria’s bread market shrinks by 3% annually, show the results of a Euromonitor study for the period 2002 – 2007. The results have been presented by Associate Professor Bistra Vasileva, lecturer with the Economy University in the city of Varna, at a discussion forum about Bulgarian bread.

250 Bulgarian households are respondents in the study.

Bulgarians are still eating predominantly white bread, with wholegrain bread consumptiongone up over the recent years – by 2% in 2004 and by 3.9% in 2007.

Rye bread consumption has increased slightly – by 3% in 2004 and by 4% in 2007. White bread consumption has decreased over the years – in 2004 its share was 92%, while in 2007 – 89%.

Bread consumer basket in the cities of Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas is various, while in the rest Bulgarian towns and villages predominantly white bread is preferable.
