Bulgaria Academy of Sciences demand doubled budget

Date: 14.10.2008

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences have called on the government to double the budget of the institution, which is now less then BGN 100 M.

"At the moment 80 per cent of the state funding goes for the salaries of our scientists," chair of BAS, Nikola Sabotinov said. "Most of what is left goes for maintaining the equipment and paying bills but not for science," the academician continued.

In the beginning of 2008, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev pledged that the Cabinet is to spend more money on Bulgarian science, which has been brought to a miserable condition during the reforms after the fall of communism. The average monthly salary in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences currently is about BGN 650 (EUR 333).
