Enemona to build 100M leva straw-fired power plant

Date: 21.10.2008

Enemona, the Bulgarian power engineering company, will build in the Danube town of Nikopol the country’s first straw-burning power station. The plant will have a capacity of 15MW and cost more than 100 million leva to build.

The regional municipality of Pleven said the company is now in talks to purchase two land plots in Nikopol and the nearby Belene. The project would benefit from proximity to Romania, a major grain producer, and a ferry line which will improve transport links between the two countries, according to the municipality.

Nikopol alone turns out some 300 000 or 350 000 tonnes of residual straw annually, which has so far been dumped on the fields.

Enemona has earmarked a further 10 million leva to build warehouses and an energy equipment factory in the town of Belene, which will host Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant.

Enemona’s long-term plans involve the construction of a small steam power plant in the town of Koinare, northern Bulgaria, to heat municipal buildings and kindergartens and later on expand to households. Talks with the local municipality are underway.
