Butterfly collection in the zoo

Date: 27.02.2008

A butterfly collection will be permanently on exhibit in the zoo of the capital. It will be opened on March 15. The ambition of the zoo is to extend the collection in the future, Director of the zoo Dr Ivan Ivanov said. The butterflies will be in a terrarium in the hall of the elephants. The butterflies are given by Olga Uskova, owner of the only butterfly farm in Bulgaria. They originate mainly from Indonesia.

There are approximately ten butterfly exhibitions in Europe, the one in Sofia being the only one on the Balkans. On May 19 the 110 anniversary of the zoo will be celebrated, zoo director said. He added that presently 1/5 of the animals in the zoo were adopted and taken care of by companies, organizations and separate people.
