Bulgaria could be Singapore in Southeastern Europe: U.S. ambassador

Date: 07.05.2009

Bulgaria could be a Singapore in Southeastern Europe. Foreign companies should be certain that the laws are enforced, that there is trained personnel here and that the climate is within the framework of the law, U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria Nancy McEldowney said in a lecture titled The Strategic Partnership between the U.S. and Bulgaria delivered in Sofia University Saint Kliment Ohridski.

She says Bulgaria could be the biggest center attracting investments in the region and this was possible if the government pursued a good policy. She gave an example – the government could develop a program for tax concessions for investors.

The U.S. is certain that whatever government is elected, it will share the transatlantic values, she said.

The ambassador noted it was disappointing that some of the proposals of NGOs for fair and transparent elections were rejected.

It is important that Bulgarians vote fairly and democratically, she highlighted.
