Released Bulgaria Sailors Set to Pay Travel Expenses

Date: 11.05.2009

Bulgaria's Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed that they will not pay the travel expenses of the freed Bulgarian sailors if they choose to return home.

Dragovest Goranov, the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman stated late Sunday that the Bulgarian consul to Delhi will wait at the port of Colombo, Sri Lanka for the arrival of the sailors, the Bulgarian daily newspaper Standart reported.

Goranov added that if the sailors decide to return to Bulgaria the Consul will help them to book tickets, but he concluded that the sailors will have to fund their own traveling expenses.

Meanwhile, the original reports of a USD 2 M ransom being delivered to the Somali pirates who had kept the Bulgarian sailors hostage on the Malaspina Castle have been contradicted by journalist Elena Yoncheva, who has been in the region and stated that the real sum paid was USD 2.5 M.
