Bulgaria Young Artist Grabs 2nd Price at Prestigious EC Contest

Date: 14.05.2009

The EC awarded Monday the winners of the competition "European Union and Citizenship."

"European citizenship gives tangible meaning to the idea of Europe, that is, a Union which goes beyond a grouping of individual States and which endows Europeans with an added identity as well as effective rights. In essence, European citizenship allows people to live Europe to the full. In this respect, I am pleased to note that the cartoonists have managed to capture the intrinsically human side of this important reality, often through their own touching experiences," the European Commission (EC) Vice-President Jacques Barrot said at the award ceremony.

The participants (over 2 500) produced their own design for a one-page comic strip - with no words - illustrating the concept of citizenship in the European Union.

The competition was addressed mainly to art and graphics students aged 16 or over who live in one of the 27 EU Member States.

After an initial selection made at national level, the 27 national prize-winners have been invited to Brussels from 9 to 11 May 2009, and three European prizewinners have been awarded in a prize-giving ceremony.

Bulgaria's Sibila Koritareva won the second prize, first prize winner is Mehdi Boualam from Belgium and the third prize went to Stephan Timmers from the Neatherlands.
