Bulgaria President Warns against Election Smear Campaigns

Date: 18.05.2009

Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov, has warned Bulgaria's political parties to avoid using discrediting materials in the current election campaigns.

"I have always been against the use of compromising and discrediting materials in election campaigning. As the MEP and the general elections are already knocking at the door I, as a politician who has run two presidential elections, would like to warn against the use of faulty practices on the part of the runners," Parvanov stated, cited by Bulgarian daily newspaper Standart.

He continued; "after the votes are counted, they all will have to sit at the same table and mull out a valid and viable model of government that will help Bulgaria out of the global economic crisis, regardless of their political affiliations.

"I shall not comment the decisions of the Constitutional Court, because they are not to be commented on, but instead observed and implemented," Parvanov concluded in his written statement.
