Sofia Mayor: I Am Poised to Govern Bulgaria Alone

Date: 28.05.2009

Bulgarian opposition leader Boyko Borisov has made it clear his goal is a landslide victory in the upcoming general elections and a majority government, headed by him.

"Should I fail to win enough votes to form our own government, I will remain leader of an opposition party," Borisov, mayor of the capital Sofia and leader of the popular centre-right GERB party, said in an interview for Standart daily.

Borisov brushed aside suggestions that he would have to form a coalition with any other party, including the right-wing formations in the so-called Blue Coalition.

"They have no grounds to believe we will invite them for a coalition government, just the opposite," Borisov said, referring to the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB).

In his words GERB will seek to win an absolute majority because this party only can guarantee that Bulgaria will stick to its European course.

Borisov vehemently ruled out any deals with the currently ruling Socialist Party, which is considered by the opposition to be nothing but an unreformed heir to the totalitarian Communist Party.

The Sofia mayor's statement comes at a time when opinion polls showed GERB increasing its lead over the ruling Socialists amidst global economic crisis and social unrest. Latest surveys show that his opposition GERB party is expected to garner 20,9 of the votes, while the ruling Socialists are likely to get 9,3 % in the European Parliament elections on June 7.

After two decades of post-Communist stagnation, patchy reforms and corruption, the majority of Bulgarians have pinned their hopes on the 49-year-old bodyguard-turned-politician. Yet others question Borisov's determination to sever links between politicians, judges and crime bosses because of his alleged past links to Bulgaria's underworld.

Bulgaria will hold its next general elections on July 5.
