Crisis Hits Young Job-Seekers Worst in Bulgaria

Date: 30.08.2009

More than 20 unemployed Bulgarians from the town of Provadia found a job at a workshop for processing clams under a PHARE project

Bulgarians in the 55-64 age bracket find it more easily to get a job than the youngsters in these times of economic crisis, an official data of the statistical institute show.

The number of the employed among people aged between 15-24 totaled 247 000 in the second quarter of the year, which is down by 18 400 over the same period in 2008.

The opposite trend is being discerned among the employed people who are to go into retirement in a few years, whose number increased by 2 000 up to nearly 460 000.

Experts attribute the trend to the lower wages that the older people agree to work for.

The number of employed Bulgarians has shrunk to 3,3 million people in the second half of the year, which is down by 72 000 over the same period in 2008.

The picture of the labor market gets bleaker due to the steady increase of the laid off, which went up by one fifth.

Nearly 175,000 are those unemployed Bulgarians, who do not seek work because they say they have gotten discouraged that they can find one.
