Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Optimistic about Belene NPP

Date: 27.06.2010

The speaker of the Bulgarian parliament Tsetska Tsacheva expressed support Sunday for building Belene NPP, saying she is an optimist about the project.

Tsacheva said that being elected from the Pleven district in northern Bulgaria, she is especially sensitive about issues of under-development of the northern and north-western parts of the country, implying that building a new NPP might improve that situation.

The town of Belene is in Bulgaria's Pleven region. The chairwoman of the National Assembly was speaking in northern Bulgarian town of Svishtov on occasion of the 133th anniversary of its liberation from Turkish rule.

Tsetska Tsacheva's statement comes after weeks of controversy and unclarity about Bulgaria's commitment for the Belene NPP project, after negative comments on the part of Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov. Tsacheva belongs to the center-right ruling GERB party, chaired by Borisov.
