Within two years Sofia will boast a new Fine Arts centre of the type of the French Louvre, envisages an ambitious project by the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture. The Arts centre will encompass the present-day Gallery of Foreign Arts, the former downtown building of the Technical University in the Vassil Levski Square and the two buildings which link them. The concept is that a common place will be created not only to allow room for a greater number of works by Bulgarian artists but also to help the presentation of an overall idea for the development of Fine Arts. For this purpose the two current permanent exhibitions of the National Gallery of Fine Arts and of the Gallery of Foreign Art will be joined under one roof.

After an overall repair of the former royal palace, which currently houses the National Fine Arts Gallery, the building will also take in the Museum of Sofia. The exhibits will show not only the ancient and medieval past of Sofia but also the trends of its development till present day.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Todor Chobanov believes this will be the first culture institute of a kind where the state and the municipality will be partners.
